We were one of the first VAR's for the Stratasys Dimension. It really did play a key roll in starting the 3D Printer revolution. At $29,900.00 it did not scare people away- and now we are a VAR for the Objet entry level 3D Printers, the Model 24 and 30. The Model 24 is $29,900.00- what a coincidence, and it can build wonderful acrylic plastic models with about three times the detail as the Dimension can build.Plus, the models in the build chamber can be built simultaneously. For details call Bob at PCS Engineering in Timonium, MD, bob@pcsenginc.com

Great article, however I disagree that subtractive or CNC machining is more expensive than additive processes. With additives you must use that machines proprietary material, with SRP or CNC I can buy my material from anywhere I want.

3D Systems' color claim should be clarified and understood by readers. In fact, that's not a new capability for them, and it's 3D printing in color. They use separate, single-color build material. Each part printed can only be printed in that one colored material. If a multicolored part is needed, the user must manually switch out the color material and then compile the parts separately when they're done. Only 5 different colored materials are available in total, 0.1% of the SWOP standard and no pixel-level color. ZPrinters are the only 3D printers that print in color. They use HP print heads, just like a color document printer, with the capability of 390,000 unique colors, and pixel-level color. The color is literally printed on the part automatically, in a single build and represents 90% of the SWOP standard. Color input files are VRML, 3DS, PLY and ZPR. Color ZPrinting utilizes full CMYK + clear, color mixing with variable drops.

Are these a real possibility in the near future because i feel amputees constantly have to sacrifice style for a pole or a leg that looks real. There are some amputees like myself who know we are unique and we want a leg just as unique as we are.

I am exclusively and *nix (Linux) user. At one time I was a Microsoft user and an Autodesk Autocad user. The leading CAD software for Linux is QCAD which I find rather difficult to use. I am hoping that your concept might be better and available for this old dinosaur, a 78 year old retired Principle Mechanical Designer from Parson's Engineering Corporation, Power and Petrochemical Division (SIP). I need to be able to illustrate concepts presented in my working website, http://chtank.org and cannot stretch my social security far enough to buy expensive software nor hire help.

When the Television was first invented, they said it would kill the cinema. When the VCR first came out, they said it would kill hollywood. When the CD-R drives first appered in PCs, critics said it would kill CD sales. When the DVD writer came out, they said it would stop people buying DVDs. What do all these things have in common??? They are all mainstream products found in virtually every home in the Western world. 3D printing WILL become as common as a home PC and the lawyers and overpriced manufacturers will have to adapt or die.

I believe they told me it was about $45,000 in US dollars. They will tell you the price if you contact them, but they resist publishing it because of their international customers. At least that is what they told me.

I'm not exactly sure how the program would do that, but my information is that it would be much easier to do so with AMF than with STL. You can download a version here http://creativemachines.cornell.edu/amf and give it a try.

Hello, Thanks for the tips. The Eco Printer basically uses erasable ink, that when printed on paper, can be erased off when required, allowing the paper to be re-printed on. A 2010 Red Dot Concept Design winner, Eco Printer uses specialized ink composed of photographic materials that disappear from UV irradiation, allowing non-sensitive documents to be reprinted over and over again.

Insufficient knowledge has definitely been a contributing factor to slow uptake, along with skepticism, reluctance to change business models that work and the large investment that has traditionally been required. These, however, are really the "emotional" barriers AM has faced through it's growing pains. On a more practical level, the barriers have been limited material choices, repeatability issues and quality.

Overall time-to-market (build times are actually quite slow as I was reminded only recently: thanks Al) is by far the longest serving and strongest argument for adopting AM within the product development cycle. It's right up there with complex geometries and reduced waste.

Virtually all of the barriers are down now, and many converging factors are raising public awareness in ways that could barely be conceived even a year or two ago.

As I said earlier today, this industry is right on the cusp of going mainstream ......

Not too worried. Doubt that printing something will ever be as cheap as buying it, especially when you add in the initial cost of the printer. 3D printing will only be popular for copying items that cannot be purchased.

This is very cool entry level 3D software but to say someone is a 'maker' because they have no experience with CAD? Not sure that will stick:)

Awesome to see Autodesk release free software to let the next generation of makers/designers/hackers/digital crafts people/architects/students/everyone pump CAD.

We are bound to see a whole new group of people start uploading their files to Shapeways too as the software outputs STL files we can use for 3D printing. Much easier to achieve relatively complex, watertight models than with SketchUp.

Thanks
Duann

You make some good points, especially about how many systems are out there. The low end machines will get better as far as accuracy and tolerance. I think they could challenge the higher end machines. Then it will be a very interesting industry to watch. I don't think the big companies ever thought that the average person would love a system for their own use. But remember, AM is 25 years old. This industry has only had this much attention focused on it once, when a couple of companies, like Stratasys, first came up with and AM machine. So the idea that "everyman" would like such a system is a bit of a surprise to them, in my view. They did not anticipate it.

No way! 3D Systems acquired another company. That leaves about 2 personalized 3D printing companies for 3D Systems to buy...Then it will be complete democratization of personalized 3D Printing. Wait isn't that called a monopoly?

From what I am hearing they are removing all the equipment from the companies they are buying and creating locations of excellence and leaving the companies they bought out to dry with no manufacturing in-house.

It appears that even the engineering "market" is splitting, as the current commercial high end AM machines are for those who don't want to service their own equipment and can afford expensive materials. They have small build spaces, are restricted in the materials they can use, don't combine additive with other modalities (like CNC), don't do well with mixed material or mixed assembly, and don't cater to iterative design, training, or building really big or really small, or anything food grade or biological. The market is fragmenting away from this core in all directions, high end, low end, engineering, non-engineering professionals, home. The race is not so much to find more volume users for existing printer systems willing to pay premium prices, fronted by design houses and service bureaus, but rather to build new systems that address the market interests of folks that presently aren't significantly involved. None of these commercial high-end AM companies report more than 5000 units in the field. Reprap alone has 10,000+ units and has much greater potential for innovation. Even if the big companies copy each improvement in sub $400 Reprap design, can they implement the changes in their $15K+ product lines as fast as Reprap folks can?
