3D Systems’ color claim should be clarified and understood by readers. In fact, that’s not a new capability for them, and it’s 3D printing in color. They use separate, single-color build material. Each part printed can only be printed in that one colored material. If a multicolored part is needed, the user must manually switch out the color material and then compile the parts separately when they’re done. Only 5 different colored materials are available in total, 0.1% of the SWOP standard and no pixel-level color. ZPrinters are the only 3D printers that print in color. They use HP print heads, just like a color document printer, with the capability of 390,000 unique colors, and pixel-level color. The color is literally printed on the part automatically, in a single build and represents 90% of the SWOP standard. Color input files are VRML, 3DS, PLY and ZPR. Color ZPrinting utilizes full CMYK + clear, color mixing with variable drops.
