Overhangs are a critical component to account for in a design. An overhang is an abrupt change in geometry compared to a gradual self-supporting angle. Unlike other 3D printing technologies that have good allowance for unsupported overhangs, DMLS has limited capability here. Damage starts to appear on unsupported overhangs that are 0.5 mm, about 0.020 in. Anything greater than that should have supports to prevent blade damage or build failure.
